CIFAL Findhorn UNITAR Training Centre
in partnership with
Dundee City Council and Sustainable Scotland Network

Are cities major contributors to global warming or hubs of innovative solutions for curbing climate change?
This international seminar will explore the role of urban planning in creating sustainable towns and cities by focussing on successful examples of best practice.

Hear representatives from:

The new Vauban district of Freiburg, Germany, known as Europe’s solar capital, where 2000 eco-homes were completed in 2006.

The new waterfront regeneration project, which reconnects Dundee City Centre with the River Tay, in one of the most notable forward-thinking projects in Scotland today.

IPPUC Curitiba, Brazil, whose planning department has developed a world-renowned transportation system. Curitiba has been addressing transportation with an integrative approach, resulting in a modelecological, people-centred city with reduced air pollution and a better quality of life.

Rizhao, China*, where a government programme enabled 99% of households in the central districts to obtain solar water heaters. There too, most traffic signals and street and park lights are powered by solar cells, limiting the city’s carbon emissions and urban pollution. *tbc

Case studies, introduced by SSN, which illustrate innovative local approaches to “Planning for a Sustainable Scotland”. Presentation topics include “Towards Sustainability: Designing with Developers” by Clackmannanshire Council and “Sustainable Building Standards” by the City of Edinburgh Council.

This seminar will be particularly relevant to:

Policy-makers, Government Officials and Local Authorities who wish to make the most effective transition towards more ecologically, economically and socially sustainable urban areas.

*Policy-makers and Local Government Officials
*Development Officers and Infrastructure Planners
*Urban Planners
*Strategic Managers of Planning and Transport Services
*Environmental Researchers and Planning Consultants
*Sustainable Development Officers
*Academics interested in practical application
*Professionals in Architectural, Engineering and Building careers

Participants will have the opportunity to:

* explore and compare new solutions and new strategies to eliminate and reduce the urban contribution to, and effects of, climate change

* discuss projects with practitioners who already work in the field of sustainable urban regeneration and employ creative, local approaches to land-use planning

* exchange ideas on how to engage in more inclusive planning processes in collaboration with local government, universities, businesses and communities

* examine the role of sustainable planning and design in the battle against climate change with the aim of global sustainability

* make business and development agency contacts

* pose questions to panels of experts

Though urban centres have been cited as major contributors to global warming, they are also hubs of innovative solutions for curbing climate change.
